The meeting commenced at 6PM and was addressed by one of the Calderdale MBC Planning Department. He went at length through the scheme and then it was the turn of the objectors to put their case. The objectors were allotted 5 minutes each and Mick Coughlan opened by objecting as detailed here.
Coun.Martin Peel asked in a most condescending manner “Have you any idea how many people are looking for premises in Calderdale?” After clarifying if the Councillor meant premises or domestic premises (turns out he meant meant industrial or residential (Peel’s reply was “this is about jobs). Mick replied that “We have done some research and found that within 1 ½ miles of the site there were 1.5 million sq. Foot of empty industrial space. Dashing the Councillors suggestion that there is indeed a need for more industrial sheds.
Steve Ainsworth then went to make his objections. To view his notes click here.
3 Councillors then spoke in objection. Coun. John Hardy (Con. Skircoat), Coun David Draycott (Lab Sowerby Bridge) and Coun. Pauline Nash (Lib Dem. Skircoat).
A council officer from the Highways Department admitted that He could not support the scheme
